- Biographical or Historical Sketch
- British illustrator Harry Furniss was essentially self-taught when he arrived in London; after several meager years, he landed a position with Punch, where his innumerable caricatures and other illustrations established his reputation. He also illustrated books, notably Lewis Carroll's Sylvie and Bruno stories, and the works of Charles Dickens. After emigrating to America, Furniss worked with Thomas Edison in the fledgling film industry, including the world's first animated cartoon film. Although an uneven artist, his best work was among the best of his era.
