- Before the war McKnight was working for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) clearing land for roads and bridges using demolitions; he later joined the Army and volunteered for the airborne; after training at Ft. Benning and North Africa he jumped into Sicily; he fought in Naples in Italy; he jumped into Caan on D-Day and Holland during Operation Market Garden; he became a POW briefly during the Battle of the Bulge; he served with the 82nd Airborne Division until reaching the Elbe river; after Sicily he was injured and transferred to the 325th Glider Battalion.
