- We reviewed 26 skiers who underwent a repair or reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament because of tears of the ligament to study how the ligaments were torn in downhill skiing and how the lesion should be treated. It was pointed out that isolated tear of the ligament was more common than a tear combined with medial collateral ligament injuries and that vigorous contraction of the nearby quadriceps femoris muscle during extension was a major cause of injury to the ligament. For maximum recovery, early corrective surgical treatment seemed to be essential.
