- This study evaluates 23 arthroscopic confirmed cases of anterior cruciate ligament rupture observed in 22 skiers. There were nine cases of isolated rupture and 14 combined with meniscus lesions. Sixty-four percent of the patients were ski racers, and 50% of the lesions occurred in skiers aged from 14 to 20 years. The injury always happened with the use of high legged boots and safety bindings, which only released with mechanisms of rotation and flexion. A backward fall or the effort to avoid it was the most frequent cause of the injury. In 10 cases, the injury occurred without the skier's fall when in a backward position, he tried to recover his balance. In this dynamic situation, an imbalance between the simultaneous contraction of the hamstrings and the quadriceps may cause a force greater than the ligament resistance. The resultant rupture can produce a forward displacement of the tibia causing compression of the posterior third of the meniscus. The use of multidirectional safety bindings or those with release when the skier falls backwards could contribute to the prevention of anterior cruciate ligament injuries.
