- The influence of cyclic and monotonic strain hardening on fracture toughness and ductile crack growth properties of 316 L stainless steel is determined using JIc and J-R curves. Cyclic strain hardening is performed by cyclic loading at different levels during precracking of specimens used for J-R tests. Monotonic strain hardening is done by controlled hot rolling of plate steel. The results obtained show that the fracture toughness is decreased by both cyclic and monotonic strain hardening. This decrease mainly affects crack initiation resistance (JIc) in the case of cyclic loading and only slightly influences crack growth resistance (dJ/da). For monotonic strain hardening, both JIc and dJ/da are strongly reduced at room and elevated temperatures. An attempt is made to determine the main factors responsible for these effects.
