- Two methods of test have been applied to the study of stress crack resistance of polyethylene resins. One test measures the stress-rupture properties of polyethylene in inert environments such as air or water. The second test characterizes the environmental stress-rupture resistance of polyethylenes subjected to surface active agents. Data from these tests show (1) the effects of resin properties (density and melt index) on stress rupture and environmental stress rupture properties, (2) the acceleration in brittle failure of polyethylenes caused by the presence of a surface active environment, (3) how the mechanism of failure differs between stress rupture and environmental stress rupture, and (4) how data from compression molded specimens can be used to determine the performance of a resin in a blown plastic bottle.
