- A high temperature apparatus has been developed for determining the wear characteristics of refractory materials for piston ring and cylinders in low heat loss advanced diesel engines. Operation of the apparatus has demonstrated good simulation with actual engine experience. Ceramic materials and coatings evaluated include zirconias, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and two chromium oxides. Both liquid and solid lubricants have also been evaluated with ceramic materials in the apparatus.
