- The notch-beam technique (NBT) for determining fracture surface energies (?i) of ceramic materials is discussed. Basic principles involved in the technique are reviewed, and effects of different test variables on measured ?i values are examined. In addition, merits and limitations of the technique are discussed, and measured values are compared with those obtained by other techniques.
