- In order to estimate the influence of evenness and macrotexture of the paved roads on fuel consumption of vehicles, three practical tests have been made: in the laboratory, with a vibrator bench to simulate unevenness; on a track to test the extreme values of the macrotexture of pavements; and on open roads with both unevenness and macrotexture. Pavement characteristics have been recorded with usual apparatus for road engineers. The effects have been expressed as extra fuel consumption, versus a completely smooth and even pavement. Both unevenness and macrotexture show a measurable extra fuel consumption. But the growing laws are not linear, and a compromise can be found for evenness according to maintenance cost and for macrotexture according to safety when wet.
