Summary
There were three interpretations that might be placed on the phrase ¿̐ưpurchase specifications,¿̐ư as applied to lubricating oils. Such specifications might: 1. Prescribe the methods of refining and manufacture, the components and additives employed, and even state the source of the crude oil¿̐ưin other words, composition specifications. 2. State the physical and chemical properties capable of being measured in any laboratory by standard methods of test on small current samples representing conditions at the date of test¿̐ưwhat we might call physical specifications. 3. Require a statement or guarantee of future performance in service or in ¿̐ưlife tests¿̐ư under actual or similar conditions¿̐ưthat is, performance specifications.
