- Rust- and oxidation-inhibited turbine oils are composed of a base oil containing at least two additives, one an antioxidant, the other a rust inhibitor. These three principal components must be selected in such a way that they can work together harmoniously, without interfering with each other's functions. Thus, even the most effective rust inhibitor would be undesirable if it showed a tendency to form oil-soluble, catalytically active metallic soaps which would interfere with the function of the antioxidant and could hasten oil-breakdown. Similarly, even the most potent antioxidant is of little value if it is corrosive to metals and promotes rusting or if it forms sludge in service no matter what the reason.
