- Corrosivity classification of the atmosphere is important for selecting optimal protective systems. This classification should be based on an understanding of the corrosion process together with reasonable engineering principles. By a critical analysis of the factors providing limits to the classification problem, several heretofore unresolved questions have been answered. These questions involve design factors, effects of different types of sheltering, fabrication effects, and the transformation of measured values to information which can be utilized technically. The Czechoslovakian system of standards covering this field is described and complemented by examples of specialized specifications for different industries. Questions for further research are proposed in order to further the classification efforts.
