- Milos Polivka and Harold Davis were pioneers in the field of nuclear shielding. Mr. Polivka was Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, for many years, while Mr. Davis was affiliated with the Department of Energy's Hanford Site, Richland, Washington, during his long career. Both individuals had a deep desire to advance radiation shielding concepts and standards. M. Dean Keller, a member of ASTM, who knew both men, described Mr. Polivka as an expert in expansive cement as well as concrete for radiation shielding. He added that Mr. Davis was noted as the first person to add boron to concrete to enhance shielding and was an expert in heavy-weight concrete. Both individuals were long-time members of ASTM and both shared authorship of this chapter in the previous edition of this publication, ASTM STP 169B. Their leadership in this field paved the way for this newly revised chapter.
