- Porous structures show substantial potential as attachment vehicles for permanent orthopedic implants. Data on the properties of porous titanium fiber and titanium wire mesh porous structures are presented. The strength and porosity requirements are reconciled by using a fully dense Ti-6Al-4V substrate coated with a porous surface. The authors show that this approach yields at least six advantages over other porous or porous-coated implant systems. Devising implants with a pressure-sintered wire mesh coating yields, in addition, the possibility of (1) increasing the mean pore size and retaining the strength, elasticity, structural integrity, and sintering ability of the porous coating; (2) decreasing the high sintering temperatures, which are detrimental to the strength and ductility of the substrate; and (3) obtaining a uniform and perfect bonding between the porous coating and the substrate.
