- Today synthetic silicas are widely used in pesticide formulation. They cannot be compared with natural occurring products such as diatomaceous earth or clays. Their properties are different. Factors like pH, hydrophilic and hydrophobic character, structuring, etc are important for the use of these products. However, the deciding properties are particle size and absorbtivity. Effects like free flowing powders, improvement of grinding, conversion of liquids into powders, control of suspension, better water stability, gelling of liquids, control of crystal growth, reduction of dermal toxicity, time release, and alike can be obtained. The proper use of synthetic silicas results in an optimal utilization of the active ingredient.
