- Summary:
- Room-temperature fatigue characteristics of ASTM Grade 2 titanium were investigated to provide information important to its design and life prediction capabilities. Load-controlled tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on mill product strip materials under various loading conditions. Results indicated that the material had a significant fatigue life at stress levels above the corresponding yield strength and that neither prestraining nor the method of load application used showed a clear influence on fatigue performance. These characteristics may have useful implications in the design of industrial equipment. The influence of various surface-defect conditions on the fatigue properties is investigated and reported, and a comparison is made between the resultant runout stresses and common allowable design stresses.
