- This paper (1) describes equipment for obtaining elevated-temperature compressive stress-strain curves and determining compressive yield strength under conditions of rapid heating, (2) evaluates the effect of several test variables on the compressive yield strength, (3) presents compressive yield strength data and compressive stress-strain curves for HM21A-T8 and HK31A-H24 magnesium sheet and HM31A-T5 magnesium extrusion, and (4) compares the compressive yield strength data to the tensile yield strength data for these alloys and conditions. A plate-type jig for lateral support of the sheet test specimen is used to avoid buckling. It incorporates (1) a means of applying and measuring the supporting force and (2) a compression spring which minimizes increases in friction resulting from thermal expansion and the Poisson effect. The following test variables were investigated and are discussed: specimen-supporting force, lubrication, method of heating, exposure time, method of strain measurement, strain rate, and temperature control. Recommendations for standard elevated-temperature compression test methods are made.
