- The industrial application of cobalt 60 in the inspection of steel weldments is investigated in actual practice by means of a comparison of radiographs taken with this source and with X-rays and gamma rays. Radiographs which have been exposed with variable X-ray voltages in the range of 250 to 2000 kv. are studied and compared to similar exposures with gamma rays from radium and cobalt 60 in the range of plate thicknesses of 1 to 4 in. In order to demonstrate not only the relative sensitivity of these sources but also the technique required, the economics, and exposure times, sensitivity charts covering these results are also presented. These studies indicate that in certain applications, when employing a specific technique, cobalt 60 is superior to radium.
