Edited and published by Mrs. Mary Barney, the National Magazine was directed to ladies and was to be generally literary and occasionally political. In addition to short stories and poetry, it published play reviews, biography, and original and selected pieces on a variety of topics--science, history, education, novel writing, railroads, travel, and people and customs of foreign lands.
