- Summary
- Description: Findings from The Red Company's 2001 production of Macbeth. The documents contain general production notes as well as details about verse, movement, music, the text and rehearsals. Points of interest include the director discussing the 'challenge and freedom in trying to create an atmosphere of evil and foreboding in daylight at the Globe' and revealing that his intention was to 'concentrate on the inner landscape of the people in the play- exploring actions and consequence, thoughts, motivations'. The audience's response and connection to the action is also considered, with the director stating that 'he wanted the moral choices' of the characters to be 'made clear, so that the audience is able to ask, what would I do?' As for costume, it is mentioned that 'strong black and white' was chosen to 'read well on the stage and lend a non-specific historical background'. Useful points are also made about pauses in sentences, with the director asking the company to take part in an exercise to demonstrate that 'Shakespeare makes choices about where to end his lines that correspond to more than the end of a sentence'.
