For more than 75 years, the Chicago Maternity Center provided safe home deliveries for Chicago mothers. But a change in attitude of modern medicine towards home birth and a decline in funding from Northwestern University forced the Center's closure in 1974. The story of the Center's history and the fight to keep it open are interwoven with the case history of one expectant mother.
