Summary
The Alaskan Gold Rush of 1882 brought prosperity to many brave adventurers and daring speculators. It also stimulated the development of several large cities, including Anchorage, which has grown from a small mining camp and railroad town into Alaska's largest commercial and transportation center. Located near Alaska's southeastern coast, the city itself is less than 100 years old, and its modern architecture and facilities provide a dramatic contrast to the wilderness and natural geological features five minutes away. Surprisingly, temperatures are relatively mild for Alaska, making the city a year-round tourist attraction - and one of America's most exciting cities. Viewers begin at Alaska International Airport, the world's largest seaplane airport, where small water-borne aircraft shuttle sport or commercial fishermen to the many remote and bountiful fishing sites in close proximity to the city. Viewers then visit one of Alaska's many resorts, where you can hike along the Wintercreek Trail or ride a tramway up the mountains, which border the city. Viewers take a boat cruise at the base of Portage Glacier, the most visited attraction in Alaska, only 45 minutes from Anchorage. After taking time out to pan for gold on one of Alaska's many pristine streams, the tour ends with a visit to the Native Art Museum in downtown Anchorage. Experiencing Anchorage is like finding that elusive gold nugget in a wilderness stream - you can't wait to come back for more!
