- Summary:
- A decorated scrapbook heavily illustrated with printed stickers, holiday cards, trade cards, decorated place cards, and cut outs of various kinds. Included are portraits of the American presidents, floral designs, gift cards, greeting cards, holiday cards, and pictures of birds, horses, cats, dogs, all arranged by subject. Of note are several advertisements from the following companies: Likes, Berwanger & Co., D.S. Brown and Co. Soap Makers and Performers, One Price clothiers, and Seal of North Carolina Smoking Tobacco-Marburg Brothers. Among the cards from establishments in York, Pa. are several that say "Compliments of Wm. Gilberthorp, 19 W. Market St., York, Penn's" and depict caricatures of African Americans. The scrapbook most likely belonged to John L. Harris or a member of his family judging by the insertion of his name with an arrow to a mischievous child on the opening advertisement, handwritten cards (Compliments of John L. Harris & Co., No. 82 W. Fayette St. (Copyright 1882)), and a Happy new year card calligraphed John L. Harris next to an identical card in the same hand, Jennie Calder.
