- Summary:
- Mass-spectrometric data were obtained from rocket-borne instruments flown from Poker Flat, Alaska, during October 1980 and 1981 under disturbed and quiet conditions, respectively. The positive ion spectra for both events appear to be compatible with our current understanding of the D-region. The instrument configuration (cone front) yielded poor negative ion currents. Much more work is needed to develop a D-region mass spectrometer which accurately observes in-situ negative ions. This need is underscored by the fact that only light negative ions, possibly mostly contaminants, were present near 80 km. Ions two to three times heavier were obtained in earlier flights with a blunt front end configuration. Nitric oxide profiles derived for both cases were within the range expected. The 1980 flight, under disturbed conditions, yielded higher concentrations than did the 1981 flight. Keywords include: D-region; Ionosphere; and Mesosphere
