Evans suggests a publication date of 1796, shortly after the letters were written. However, the preface describes Bemis as residing as minister in Harvard, Mass., a position he did not assume until 1801. Bemis, a Federalist in a predominantly Jeffersonian parish, was forced to resign in April of 1813, and it is likely that these letters were published shortly before in an effort to discredit him. The letters are addressed to Lucy Mosman. Bemis is charged in the preface and in a series of questions on p. 16 with breach of promise in ending his relationship with Miss Mosman.
