He has devoted recent years to the fundamental revision and rewriting of the Mattingly-Sydenham volume 1 (1923) of that series". cf. dust jacket of Revised v. 1." ... The sixty years which have elapsed since the publication of the first volume ... have brought changes and improvements in the methods and standards of presentation, and the editors have felt that there would now be benefit to the series from re-publication of some of the earlier volumes. ... [Therefore] it was decided that the first volume to be re-worked should be vol. 1 ... cf. Foreword of v. 1.
