"Series transposed from head of title. Peter G. Thomson was active as a printer, publisher, and bookseller in Cincinnati from 1877 until 1889. See Walter Sutton, The western book trade, (1961), p. 339. Pages [1] and [12] designed to look like a colored wrapper. Pagination: [3], 3-8, [3] p. Even-numbered rectos. Chromolithographed illustrations signed, "JBG," the monogram of J.B. Geyser. Geyser is listed in the 1883 Cincinnati directory as John B. Geyser, an artist living at 82 Betts St., Cincinnati. Cf. Mary Sayre Haverstock, Artists in Ohio, 1787-1900 (2000). "New picture books. ... Mary Bell's series. 5 cts. each. Eight kinds, small 4to, each containing four full-page colored illustrations. ... Beauty and the beast. ..."---advertisement, p. [12]."
