- Summary
- Exile is one of those historical phenomena that profoundly affect those who suffer from it: it disrupts personal, work, family, social and political life, and each individual assimilates to it in a different way. For this reason, talking about everyday life in the circumstances of an exile is more complicated than in normal situations: everyone deals with the situation in a unique way and everyone faces insertion into a new environment in their own way. There are many dimensions of Spanish exile that have been the object of investigation: its origins; its ideological, political and social characteristics; their influence, etc. Above all, the lives of refugees who made up a group notable for their intellectual and political achievements have been studied. There are innumerable texts dedicated to lawyers, painters, philosophers, musicians and writers who made up part of the exile in a definite and marked way. It is necessary, however, to recall more widely the daily life of those who, without standing out for any distinctive feat or circumstance, formed that essential and majority group of exile; fathers, mothers, public officials, workers, and soldiers who made a new common life together, suffered the same troubles and were part of a history and a process of integration into Mexican society. In this work, Fernando Serrano Migallón performs a historical analysis of everyday life where he refers to human relationships, their evolution, cultural forms and the ethical values that gradually arose in this group.
