"The author's friendly address" (p. [2-5]) is signed: Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq., and dated at Providence. The almanac is presumably by Benjamin West of that city, to whom Russell's Bickerstaff series is attributed by Evans, the Dictionary of American biography, and in Nichols, C.L. "Notes on the almanacs of Massachusetts." Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, n.s. v. 22 (1912): 34-35. It bears few resemblances to West's North-American calendar or The Rhode-Island almanack for 1787 (Providence). "Bickerstaff" denounces the "spurious and erroneous almanacks, published under my name, by Folsom for 1785 and 1786, and by Coverly for 1786." These almanacs are, in fact, the apparent work of calculators other than West.
The first edition was advertised by Russell in the Massachusetts centinel, Boston, Nov. 8, 1786. The last page includes an advertisement by "E Russell, the publisher," and the cuts at the head of the calendar pages are those used by Russell in his previous issues of this Bickerstaff series.
Not listed in Charles Evans' American bibliography (Chicago : Blakely Press, 1903-1959) or in Roger Bristol's Supplement to Charles Evans' American bibliography (Charlottesville : University of Virginia Press, 1970).
