Methods are described for recoiling solid state transmission spectra using 1 to 10 mg of radioactive actinide compounds in the range 0.2 to 2.2 mu (5f/sup q/ yields 5f/sup q-1/6d and 5f/sup q/ yields 5f/sup q/ transitions). Factors that influence the quality of the spectra are discussed. (auth)
