Some Remarks Concerning the Absolute Measurement of [beta] Emitters by the 4pi Counter; QUELQUES REMARQUES SUR LA MESURE ABSOLUE DES EMETTEURS [beta] AU COMPTEUR 4pi
The precision obtainable with a proportional or Geiger-Mueller 4 pi counter in the determination of radioactivities depends on the precision with which the various corrections are evaluated. One of the most important corrections is the correction for absorption in the film serving as support for the source. To determine conditions in which the absorption could be maintained at a negligible level, a study was made with a 4 pi Geiger-Mueller tube. The performance of the tube using very thin films was determined. Film thicknesses of 5 mu g/cm/sup 2/ were obtained, and such films made it possible to eliminate completely the absorption correction for energies higher than 0.3 Mev. For energies lower than 0.3 Mev, the addition of a coincidence amplifier with resolution time slightly higher than the average transport'' time of the particles eliminates the need for absorption corrections.
