- Summary
- The electrostatic contrlbutlons to the elastic shear constants 1/2(c/sub 11/-c/sub 12/), c/sup 44/, and the bulk modulus are calculated for calciuan fluoride, assuming a Coulomb attractlve force. Born-Mayer theory was first used to evaluate the repulsive energy contribution to the elastic constants, and the theoretically-determined values were compared wita experiment. However, since this procedure led to poor agreement with the experimetal data, the repulsive energles were modified; the exponential form was retained, but the parameters were adjusted in such a way as to bring the calculated elastlc constant values into agreement with the experimental values. The adjusted values were: A/sub +-/ = 2.818 times than Bornthe Born-Mayer value = 1.42 x 10/sup -11/ ergs, and p =0.870 times the Born-Mayer value = 0.300 x 10/sup -8/ cms. It is concluded that the parameters found by Born and Mayer for the alkali halides are not applicable. (auth)
