- Summary
- The relative intensitics of the gamma rays of the descendants of radiothorium were studied by measuring the photoelectron spectrum from thorium and platinum foils. Thd- relative sensitivity of the tirrangement at different energics was found by using other sources hofofving g.imma rays of known relative intensity. Some of thc prey'ious work on thc radiations from the thorium active deposit is reviewed. Comparison of the measured gammofof-rofofy intensities with the measuremcnts by othcrs of internal conversion intensities allowed internal conversion eoeffieients to be computed and the muitipolaritics of m;iny transitions to be determined. An electric monopole transition was found in polonlum-2l2. The gamma intd'nsitics were used to find the intensitics of bcta branches and the naturc of thc beta transitions. Gamma intensities were compared with the known intensitics of long range alpha particles from polonium2l2 and some gamma half lives were computed for that nuclcus. The level schemes of polonlum-2l2, lead-208, thallium-208, and bismuth-2l2 are dlscussed in the light of the information fouad here and other recent lnformation, and are compared wlth thc predictions of the shell iind collective models. A llsting of much of thc prevlous work on the radiations from and decay schemes of these nuclei is included. (auth)
