- Summary
- The smart materials have come in to existence during conceiving the idea of materials/systems which has 4th dimension. To match the advancement in instrumentation, efforts are being done to develop materials, which are mostly smart materials. The response of stimuli responsive polymers is reversible in nature. This has developed interest among academic area, research and industrial areas as well. The challenge remains in coupling their application with non-adverse effect on the environment. To take care of all the parameter, there is requirement to understand the basics. This book is different from other book in that it explores more on polymer materials⁰́₉ smart behaviour covering vibration damping, thermal and electrochemical energy, sensing at trace level, biotechnology and so on. The book is distributed in 14 chapters to discuss on diverse areas. Photoresponsive polymers that can be manipulated with specific frequency of light Designing of polymers for vibration damping Smart manipulations of hydrophic and superhydrophobic polymers Biopolymers including hydrogel for smart application, drug delivery etc. Smart paints Self-healing and shape memory polymers Holography for data storage Phase change polymers and solid polymer electrolyte for thermal and electrochemical energy Molecularly imprinting polymers for sub ppm sensing and removal of undesired materials Smart textile covering the concept of advanced textiles The audience will particularly be researchers, students of higher classes and teachers involved in higher education. It will give the basics in brief and applications in details to provide total understanding to the readers.

- Biographical or Historical Sketch
- Dr.Asit Baran Samui completed Ph.D. from University of Mumbai, India in 1986. He has served as material scientist in Naval Materials Research laboratory, DRDO, India. During last several years he is engaged with teaching in various universities including the current one, Institute of Chemical Technology. He was engaged with multidisciplinary research activities in DRDO resulting in development of a range of products. The work included speciality polymers, polymers for thermal management and sub-ppt sensing, extensive studies on conducting polymers, nanoceramics and smart polymers. He was leading a group of scientists in DRDO engaged in the development of smart materials. His current teaching areas are polymers science, Nanotechnology and smart polymers. At present he is guiding students on `Phase change materials⁰́₉, ⁰́₈Molecular imprinting polymers⁰́₉, `Polymer composites⁰́₉ and `Catalyst based pyrolysis of waste polymer⁰́₉. He has about 120 publications in peer reviewed journals including several review papers and 09 Indian patents. There are about a dozen book chapters to his credit including hand book, encyclopedia across multiple publishers. He has guided successfully a dozen Ph.D students and several M.Sc. and M. Tech students. Regarding editing, he acted as guest editor for one issue of `Defence Science Journal⁰́₉, India. He is also member of several journals⁰́₉ editorial board.
