- Summary
- A study was made of the two-phase impurity inclusions that frequently appear in hot isostatically pressed UN but at a level not identifiable by x-ray analysis. It appears that the impurities are carried through the various processing steps, perhaps from the original U metal. Equilibrium compositions in the U/sub 2/N/sub 3/- UN/sub 2/ region were determined as a function of N pressure over a temperature range of 700 to 850 un. Concent 85% C. From these measurements the partial molar free energy of dissociation, the partial molar enthalpy, and the partial molar entropy were calculated. Studies were also made on the determination of uranium activity in UN, the U liquidus line in equilibrium with UN, and the vapor pressure of UN. In UN melting studies, consumable arc-melting techniques show considerable promise for producing highquality UN specimens. A UN specimen was tested for measuring the compositional changes that occur as a result of thermal gradients. Specimens were also prepared for UN compatibility studies in Na-K, H/sub 2/O, and terphenyl and against stainless steel, Zircaloy-2, and Al. (P.C.H.)
