- Letter of transmittal to the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, is from A. McConnell, President, Office of the Board of Public Works, and is dated February 22, 1837. The report is addressed to the Board of Public Works, is dated 10th February, 1837, and is signed by Sam'l R. Curtis, Enginrer (i.e. Engineer).
"I [Samuel R. Curtis] have the honor to report the result of my preliminary surveys of the Ohio, Wayne, Richland and Crawford canal or rail road, made in pursuance of your order of the 18th of April, 1836. The object of this proposed work appears to be the continuation of the Pennsylvania works, by continuing the Sandy and Beaver canal, which terminates at the town of Bolivar. The importance of such a continuous line, running at nearly an equal distance from the Cumberland road on the south, and Lake Erie on the north, appears to occupy much attention throughout this quarter of the State. The Engineer has, therefore, bestowed much labor and examination on the subject, though several more surveys should be made before a final location can be determined, or before a work of so much importance should be commenced."--Page 3.
