Summary
Originally founded in 1840 as an American Transcendentalist publication, The Dial was initially published intermittently due in equal measure to its fluctuating public reception and financial instability. Only in 1920, after being purchased by Scofield Thayer and Dr. James Sibley Watson, did The Dial become recognised as the political review and modern literary critic publication as it is widely celebrated today. Publishing influential artwork, poetry and fiction by authors such as William Yeats, T.S. Eliot, E.E. Cummings, Bertrand Russell and Ezra Pound, The Dial continued to cast a light (as the Magazine's name implied) on new and up-and-coming literary talent which Thayer and Watson strove to further with their creation of The Dial Award in June 1921.
