- Summary
- Founded by the Thorpe Brothers in 1874, the 'Home' as it was originally titled was a budget publication, only 8 pages in size and printed on cheap paper, with a focus on day-to-day lives, household tips, domestic adverts and fiction. The magazine changed hands and names numerous times from its early inception, finally taking the name of the Woman's Home Companion in 1896 in an attempt to compete with the Ladies Home Journal. Under editorship of Gertrude Battles Lanes (1911-1941) the Woman's Home Companion, published monthly, continued to include practical household hints and tips alongside serialized fiction.
