Summary
The theory of Pines and Bohm that attributed energy losses in metals to the excitation of the conduction electron plasma is reviewed, together with its experimental verification. The search for the emission of monochromatic light from irradiated metals, indicating the decay by radiation of the conduction electron plasma, is also summarized.
