- Summary:
- The process previously outlined for the recovery of thorium from liquors obtained by sulfuric attack on monazite using cellulose phosphate (C.R.L./ A.E.140) has been further investigated. The presence of appreciable quantities of phosphate in the final concentrate has been shown to be due to the adsorption of a cationic species of thorium phosphate. The preparation of cellulose phosphate has been studied systematically and conditions determined whereby this effect can be reduced and also the physical properties of the adsorbent improved. Optimum conditions of ionexchange column size and flow rates of solutions have been determined for the operation of this process, and the probable number of successive adsorption and elution cycles to which cellulose phosphate may be subjected has been estimated.
