The Hudson River Seminary opened in 1836, and was incorporated on May 6, 1837, "but soon after was closed for want of funds." Cf. History of Columbia County, New York, 1878, p. 352. In its Catalogue of the officers and students of the Hudson River Seminary, for the year ending March 29, 1837, it is noted on p. [9] that "an additional department is in contemplation for the education of teachers of common schools." Apparently an insufficient number of subscribers were obtained to meet the expenses of publishing the periodical, thus making it difficult to sustain the new department, and ultimately the operations of the seminary itself.
