- Summary
- Report of a Maine legislative committee regarding currency, particularly in relation to the actions of the federal government and the federal banks. Included is a history of the currency system, as well as the causes of the present crisis. Resolutions supporting the federal bank with limitations and restrictions on currency and not controlled by the executive branch followed the report, as well as a summary of the production and consumption of precious metals. The report concludes, "It is therefore, in the opinion of your Committee, the solemn and imperative duty of this Legislature, to remonstrate with Congress before it is too late, against the passage of the bill establishing the Sub-Treasury system--and to request our Senators, and Representatives, in Congress assembled, to exert their united and individual influence, in opposition to a measure fraught with such evil consequences, and in its tendencies calculated to subvert the liberties of the country." The report is signed by R.H. Vose, Per Order.
