At foot: The verses on this sheet were written by the American lightning poet, DeWolfe, while the 23rd Regiment was marching from Lynnfield Camp to Salem, on Thursday, October 31, 1861. The Lightning poet, walking by the side of the soldiers, carried paper and pencil in his hand, and composed the verses. Captain Brewster went into a store and the A.L.P. discovered the gallant Captain throwing apples to the men under his command. These verses were, critics will please remember, written under many disadvantages.
