- I. The question stated ; "Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is is lawful to give tribute unto Casear, or not?" St. Matthew xxii, 15-17 -- 2. The answer of Christ, and the developments of European history ; "But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hyporocrites? Shew me the tribute of money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar; and unto God the things that are God's" St. Matthew xxii, 18-21 and 3. The answers of Christ, and the developments of American history ; "If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend." St. John six, 12 -- 4. Education ; "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." St. Matthew xxviii, 18-20 -- 5. Charity ; "For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good." St. Mark xiv.7 -- 6. The ultimate issue ; "Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear withness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." St. John xviii, 37.
