Summary
The facilities at Windscale for post-irradiation exami nation are described. The types of fuel elements examined include Windscale fuel elements, Calder fuel elements, and prototypes of fuel elements for new power stations. Diagrams and pictures of the facilities are included. Some of the effects studied are surface roughening of the fuel, bowing, length and diameter changes, swelling, leaks in the can, deformation of heat transfer surface and fittings, microstructure of the fuel, and microstructure of the can.
