The results of a preliminary theoretical analysis of the structural performance of the MGCR heterogeneous fuel element sheath are presented. A method for prestressing the sheath in the circumferential direction is examined together with the effect of the prestress condition on subsequent performance under reactor conditions. The analysis is applied to three candidate sheath materials in order to obtain comparative data. (auth)
