- Summary
- The case describes the origins and development of India-based Cue Learn Pvt. Ltd. (Cuemath) in becoming an international presence. Founded in 2013, and led by Manan Khurma, Cuemath is India's top online math learning program for students from kindergarten to tenth grade. The start-up is present in more than ten countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Canada. The Cuemath learning program was developed by world-class teachers from prestigious universities in India and the United Kingdom. The start-up organizers believed that it was creating value not only for students but also for tutors, as they were mainly retired personnel or highly qualified women taking a break from their career to manage the family after becoming parents. Cuemath followed a micro-franchising model, whereby tutors in India could earn USD 610 per month. By November 2020, Cuemath was able to offer online math tutorials to overseas students at affordable cost, because the tutors were based in India. However, does Khurma's micro-franchise model add value for tutors? As Cuemath internationalizes, should it offer only online tutorials or include home-based tuition for overseas students, as it does in India?
