The continuous dissolution of aluminum and uraniumaluminum alloy slugs by mercury-catalyzed nitric acid in a five-inch diameter tall pipe dissolver vessel was studied. Continuous dissolution of the metal elements was accom dition of 5.6M nitric acid and the injection, at the required rate, of 1.125M mercuric nitrate solution to the bottom of the dissolver, the addition, at a prescribed rate, of the metul elements to the top of the dissolver, and the removal of the dissolver solution or effluent from an intermediate point of the dissolver. Over twenty runs were made under various operating conditions and in general the results were highly satisfactory and verified both the scale-up equations and the operability of the plant dissolver.
