Summary
The effective neutron capture cross section and diffusion constants for cadmium-light water solutions were measured by the pulsed neutron technique. Theory shows that a cooling effect occurs that changes the constants, the change depending on the mean square energy transfer (M/sub 2/) between neutrons and medium. An M/sub 2/ of 1.65 plus or minus 0.49 cm/sup -1/ was obtained from the measurements. This value can be explained by assuming that the neutrons interact with complexes of water molecules, the apparent mass of the molecules being >18. A method for eliminating higher harmonics is also described. (auth)
