- Summary
- The fraction of total fission energy absorbed by the organic moderator and reflector, terphenyl, in the OMRE sad in both a metal and UO/siub 2/ fueled 45.5 Mw (thermal) OMR was deternfned assurung a temperature of 550 tained F. Qualitatively, it was found that the fraction of energy absorbed by the organic decreased with an increase in operating temperature. The percentage of total fission energy absorbed by the organic in the OMRE was 10.3%, 4.9% in the inetal fueled OMR, and 4.3% in the UO/sub 2/fueled OMR. The sources of energy considered were fast neutrons slowing down, gamma rays produced by radiative capture in core abn surrounding regions, prompt fission gammas, and gamma rays emitted by fission prcducts.
